UC San Diego Secures $1.73 Billion in New Research Funding for FY24

In its 2024 fiscal year report, UC San Diego revealed that it has been awarded an impressive $1.73 billion in new research grants—reflecting both its stature and sustained strength as a leading public research university.

As one of the most highly funded institutions in the nation, UC San Diego continues to attract diverse support. While federal grants dipped this year, the university made up for it with increased backing from state and nonprofit sources, ensuring healthy momentum for key projects.

Among its departments, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography dominated in growth, securing nearly $302 million—an encouraging 17% boost over last year. Meanwhile, the Health Sciences division remained the major contributor overall, accounting for more than half of the university’s active research awards.

One of the standout projects was a $6 million federal award supporting marine environmental research—highlighting the university’s commitment to studying ecological impacts off the Southern California coast. Another high-profile grant, exceeding $25 million, has been directed toward creating an integrated vital records system to enhance public health analytics.

Despite a slight decline in the total number of new projects (amid broader economic shifts), the average value per grant rose significantly. Departments such as Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Biological Sciences each received hundreds of millions in new awards, while engineering programs emerged as particularly strong performers.

Yet not all funding trends were positive. Federal support from major agencies—including the NIH, NSF, and NASA—fell notably. In contrast, awards from the Department of Energy and Department of Defense rose moderately. State and private sector contributions, however, surged, highlighting the effectiveness of UC San Diego’s diversified funding strategy.

Importantly, this strong funding performance coincided with a rise in research participation across historically underrepresented communities: women-led projects increased by 13%, and submissions by minority-led teams rose by 18%, signaling growing equity in the university’s research ecosystem.

Why It Matters

  • Diversified funding helps cushion against fluctuations in federal budgets.
  • Oceans, health, data science and other domains are receiving prominent support, underscoring UCSD’s leadership.
  • Stronger involvement from diverse researchers strengthens innovation and inclusion.

As UC San Diego sets its sights on future proposals, the trends suggest it’s well-positioned to maintain its upward trajectory—continuing to drive science, medical breakthroughs, and inclusive research collaborations.
