New Delhi, August 28, 2025: The Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in Delhi has created history by performing India’s first robotic, bladeless laser cataract surgery using the state-of-the-art ALLY Adaptive Cataract Treatment System. With this achievement, the hospital becomes the first government facility in India — and only the second in South Asia — to adopt this advanced surgical technology.

Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness in India, responsible for over 60% of visual impairment cases among the elderly. Traditionally, cataract surgery involves making a manual incision to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). While effective, conventional techniques depend heavily on the surgeon’s precision and can vary in outcomes.

The procedure carried out at AHRR was a Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS), a cutting-edge method where a femtosecond laser performs critical steps of the operation — such as corneal incisions, lens fragmentation, and capsulotomy — with micron-level precision.
Compared to conventional methods, robotic laser surgery offers:
